Los Llanos

In Australia it is referred to as the Outback; In Argentina, as Pampas. In Venezuela that last frontier is known as Los Llanos. This incredible vast area filled with great beauty and myth still remains in many ways one of Venezuela’s mysteries at least in tourist terms. Covering over 116.000 sq. miles ( 300.000 sq. Km) Los  Llanos  is not  really an easy area to get to know as one would  think originally. Having this “Wild West “ feel” is only part of it. Los Llanos makes up one of the great wild life watching areas of South America along with mighty rivers and spectacular savannahs,  it is impressive all along.  Climate  There are basically two seasons in Los Llanos. The wet season (invierno) and the dry season (verano). In the wet season which spans from May to November the area is hit by heavy rains which literally flood everything, and cattle must be taken to higher ground or it will drown. Then from December to April the sun takes over and the heat is incredibly intense so much so that the earth cracks out of sheer dryness. The dry season is the best time to see wildlife. All year round the the heat of Los Llanos is extreme, although “winter “ tends to be humid. In both seasons the beauty of the savannah is simply unforgettable.  What to do  Independent travelers with their own transport can drive south from Caracas across the Andes to the northernmost fringes of Los Llanos known as Llano alto where it is possible to find remote riverside areas for camping. The people of Los Llanos are famous for their hospitality and there is usually no problem with traditional accommodation – hammocks  and they can be hung just about everywhere even on private property or to spend the night on a farm. Because of the distances involved, driving deeper into los Llanos can be very tiring traveling across endless countryside but it can be quite attractive to the most dedicated motorist.
